You may be thinking, “I already have perfume. Why do I need this?” Although perfume has been used since biblical times and before, modern artificial fragrances were not invented until the 1870s. Before that, only essential oils, extracts, infusions (combining dried herbs with oil or water) and hydrosols (the scented water left after distilling oils) were used. Many of the chemicals in modern perfumes are not thoroughly tested for many reasons, and what oils or real plant products involved are not pure. e.g., many have been adulterated by chemical extraction rather than steam extraction.
As a result, many people are unaware that the ingredients in their yummy Pumpkin Spice plugins, much less their favorite body scents, contain chemicals that are respiratory irritants, trigger asthma and in some cases, are worse for the body than second-hand smoke. The research is still out on finding out exactly how these affect us long-term, such as cancer, organ damage, and effects on the brain.
Aromatherapy is what people turn to when they find out what synthetic fragrances actually do in the body. Essential oils used in natural practices like aromatherapy, ayurvedic medicine, and other holistic healthcare, have been proven to heal emotional trauma, benefit body systems, and affect emotions through the limbic system.
Did you know that most medicines and perfumes are based on essential oil research, where one specific compound is replicated in a lab to be used in the product? Using essential oils eliminates the need for the replicated (chemically-created) compound and utilizes what is natural and accepted by our bodies easily.
