Confession: Until just a few years ago I was in the “I eat healthily so don’t think I need a supplement” category. If only I knew then what I know now about Vitamin C!
Modern life exposes us to so many environmental stressors; we are breathing toxic chemicals and carcinogens from the air around us (both inside and outside our homes), we are absorbing them through our skin, we are touching them and being exposed through our food, and our body products.
Modern medicine might have cured a lot of diseases but modern life has created conditions for a whole bunch of new ailments to emerge.
It’s exactly because of our environmental and social/emotional stressors that supplements can be so beneficial in our lives.
I’m going to cover Vitamin C today, and if you all like this maybe we’ll cover a few other supplements.
Vitamin C
Until I saw this video from David Eddy, I had no idea about the link between Skin and Vitamin C. I bruise easily and cuts take forever to heal. After finding out all the info below, I’m adding Vitamin C to my morning routine immediately as of today.
So where did all the fuss about Vitamin C start? Maybe you’ve heard of British Sailors that were referred to as “Lime-ys”? That’s because back in the day, British army would issue limes as part of rations to sailors when they were at sea. Scientists discovered that 25mg of Vitamin C per day can prevent scurvy. Scurvy is a NASTY condition – it causes you to bleed to death internally because of perforations that develop in the linings of the veins and arteries. When there’s a lack of Vitamin C the veins weaken and cause lots of vascular problems.
This is because Vitamin C is an essential building block for collagen! And we all know how important collagen is for skin health, and vein health too. People literally choose to get injected with the stuff to look younger. Let’s try supporting it from the inside first, hey? What else is Vitamin C good for?
- It’s great at healing wounds and skin making it a good option to take before and after surgery and every day for cuts and scrapes.
- It’s considered an antioxidant and can reenergize existing antioxidants in your body.
- It’s an immune booster (this is what most of us think of when we think of Vitamin C) and taken early can help decrease the duration and severity of the common cold.
- It’s hard to take too much – it’s water soluble as your body just passes out what you don’t need so you can feel comfortable taking it every day.
FUN FACT: Humans and Guinea Pigs are the only animals that don’t produce their own Vitamin C!
